A Day in Her Life in October


October 5 and 6, 1789

A mob of approximately six thousand, mostly women, march to Versailles, demanding bread and the removal of the royal family to Paris. By 1 PM on October 6, a long caravan of bumper-to-bumper coaches inches its way from Versailles to Paris. Louis XIV’s magnum opus is forlornly shuttered.


October 16, 1798

Marie Antoinette is found guilty of treason at 4 AM; by 11 AM she is seated in a manure cart on her way to the scaffold for execution.


october 19, 1851

Madame Royale, the sole surviving child of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, dies of pneumonia.


october 22, 1781

All of France is electrified with the birth of Louis Joseph, first-born son of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.


october 26, 1759

Georges Danton is born. A pragmatic man who consistently advanced his own personal interests. He would become a major player in the fate of Louis and Antoinette.
